NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) — Funeral arrangements for the six people killed in this week’s Nashville school shooting were made public Thursday.a grieving city mourns the victims of a horrific attack that turned an ordinary school day on a bright sunny morning into a harrowing tragedy.
Heartbreaking new details continue to emerge in the lives of three adults and three nine-year-old students who police said were killed in a shooting at a Covenant school on Monday. Identified as Deekhouse, Harry Scruggs, and William Kinney. Also killed was Katherine Kuns, 60. Principal; Mike Hill, 61, janitor. and substitute teacher Cynthia Peake, 61.
Evelyn’s funeral was scheduled for Friday at Woodmont Christian Church in Nashville, followed by a private reception, according to an obituary provided to the Associated Press by a family friend. People are invited to wear pink and other fun colors “in honor of Evelyn’s love of light and color”.
Harry’s family planned a private funeral for Saturday at the Covenant Presbyterian Church, where her father is the senior pastor. On Thursday, members of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, including the girl’s grandparents, planned to pray the Rosary for Harry and all those affected by the shooting, according to a post on the church’s Facebook page.
Hill’s funeral is scheduled for Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Nashville’s Stevens Valley Church, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m., Rev. Jim Buckman said.
Koonce’s visit was scheduled at Christ Presbyterian Church on Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm, with a service at 1:00 pm the following day.
Kinney’s service was scheduled for Sunday at 2:30 pm at the Presbyterian Church.
Peak’s visit was scheduled for 10:30 am on Saturday, with a noon service also at the Presbyterian Church.
Funeral plans announced as new information about Evelyn and some others released.
In an obituary sent to AP by a family friend, Evelyn was described as a “constant beacon of joy” who loves art, music, animals, and cuddles on the couch with her sister.
“Evelyn’s unwavering belief in the goodness of others made her feel known and seen, but never criticized,” the obituary states. “Her loving family members agree that she was a safe place for everyone.”
In preschool, Evelyn “often put herself between two young babies and patted them on the back to intuitively comfort them.” According to her obituary, she spread her arms to make her laugh and greet people.
According to the obituary, Evelyn enjoyed building and painting, and her teachers “watched Evelyn study the world around her with curiosity, enthusiasm and clarity.” … apparently …
She also liked to sing along to Taylor Swift and the Broadway show Hamilton. She also loves her dogs Marble and Birdie and wanted a mouse for her 10th birthday present.
“She was strong but never pushy, and possessed a poise and poise beyond her years,” the obituary said. “This girl could ‘read the room.'”
While Evelyn’s family prepared for her funeral, the William Kinney Youth Baseball League was taking steps to remember teammates and friends.
The night after the shooting, the coach at Cleave Hall held a prayer and silence for the boy. The tributes were posted on his Facebook page at the park.
William has played baseball at the park in the past and his team this season has been the Reds, said Steve Chericho, director of Cleave Hall Youth Athletic. Players and their families wear red on the field and in the stands. A red ribbon is placed on the field where William played.
“I covered everything in red,” Cherrico says. “We put a lot of memorabilia in the ballpark itself.”
Chericho said members of the league were heartbroken that William and others were killed. Chericho said it wouldn’t be the first time Cleave Hall has lost a player.
“The league has always stepped up and come together as a family,” he said.
The Cincinnati Reds of Major League Baseball posted the following on Instagram in response to Park’s tribute.
