Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida was one of several locations that received fake bomb threats from a teenage boy, according to police.
(CNN) — Authorities said Friday that a 16-year-old man from Dania Beach, Fla., was arrested on suspicion of making a series of false reports of bomb threats at schools and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
According to a news release from the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the identity of the boy has not been released, but the boy made the first call to 9-1-1 around 10 a.m. and told the operator, “There was a bombing at South Broward High School. I’m going to wake you up,” he said. . A school in Broward County, Fla., was evacuated immediately afterward, officials said.
Minutes later, the suspect called 9-1-1 again and “threatened in shootings at South Broward High School and Attucks Middle School,” according to the Sheriff’s Office. Located in Hollywood, Florida. “As a result, Attucks Middle School was secured in place,” officials said.
“As a result of the investigation, in the hours that followed, the boy made further false bomb threats at Coconut Creek High School, Blanche Ely High School, Coral Glades High School, and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, disrupting daily operations. It’s been revealed,” the sheriff’s office said.
After receiving a call, investigators monitored cameras at the affected school, searched all locations, and ultimately “determined there was no real threat,” officials said.
Hoaxes and false reports of shooters, or “swatting,” are a disturbing trend that continues to disrupt school life across the country, forcing lockdowns and straining police resources. At the same time, it is sowing fear and confusion among students, parents and educators, reports CNN.
Multiple agencies worked together on Friday to “produce information to locate this affected teenage out-of-school boy,” the sheriff’s office said.
The boy was arrested and taken to the county juvenile detention center for processing and is currently being charged with written death threats, false reporting of bombs and firearms, and school disturbance, according to a news release.
