Fountain, Colorado. (KRDO) — 13 Investigate We’re investigating the sudden retirement of former Fountain Police Chief Chris Heberer.
Fountain City told KRDO that Heberer announced his retirement on Tuesday. The eight-year police chief at Fountain said he was retiring to focus on his family.
Mr. Heberer served as the city’s Chief of Public Safety, overseeing both the Fountain Police Department and the Fire Department, while also performing the duties of Chief of Police.
“That made the decision more difficult, but in the end it was the right one for me and my family to focus on our family,” Heberer said.
Fountain Mayor Sharon Thompson said: 13 Investigate He told the city in March that he wanted to move to full-time public security chief and promote a new police chief, the people said. The city announced that it posted the police chief’s post inside last month.
“While we will be sad to lose him and the incredible leadership he brought to our city over eight years, we are happy he has changed this life,” Mayor Thompson said in a statement.

As you may know, Chris Heberer is the city’s chief of public safety and oversees both the police and fire departments. In that role, he also carries out the duties of a police chief. In March, he asked the city to consider making him a full-time chief of public security and promoting a police chief who could carry out the duties without juggling both roles. Ultimately, the city began the process to make that transition, posting internally the position of Chief of Police last month.
After these discussions, Chris decided it was time to make a change in his life and wanted to step away from law enforcement for a while and consider his future with his family. He has made the decision to retire and we have chosen not to serve as Chief of Public Security at this time. The council was able to interview Mark Cristiani, commander of the Fountain Police Department, and was convinced that he would be promoted to Chief of Police. However, Chris was out of town on vacation and was due to be absent from the upcoming Council meeting, so we swore in Mark last night so that Chris could attend the event and badge him.
