The new single “Stranger in the Barn” from ISMAY’s upcoming album will be available on all streaming platforms on May 2nd. An accompanying video will be released on her May 16th. This track is a collaboration with prolific folk/Americana multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer Andrew Merlin of Watchhouse (formerly Mandolin Orange) recorded at Echo Mountain Recording Studios in Asheville, North Carolina. ISMAY will share the stage in support of his new single with Davis on May 5th, Misner & Smith on May 6th in Santa Rosa, and Sunny War in San Francisco on May 26th. See show details below.
There’s music you hear and music you see, and the best do both. ISMAY creates intimate folk/Americana his songs that take you directly to the land where they were written, deeply rooted in the heart of Sonoma Mountain. The experience of taming a wild horse, escaping a wildfire and laying a lamb, fused with warm guitars and delicately graceful vocals, is an original soundscape that is a feast for the ear and the imagination.
Inspired by singer/songwriter Avery Hellman (they/them or she/her), ISMAY released their full-length debut album Songs Of Sonoma Mountain in 2020 to widespread acclaim. He was voted one of her 10 Best Her Albums in the Bay Area by KQED Arts and has been featured in American Songwriter, No Depression, Sonoma Magazine and more. Blending field recordings and complex melodies with live guitar-based ingenious constructions, ISMAY’s old-world charm is aptly showcased.
Hellman’s musical talent is no surprise. Growing up backstage at his grandfather’s Warren Hellman’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. So early on he was influenced by artists such as Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch and Hazel Dickens. Since then, ISMAY has performed at music festivals such as Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Strawberry Music Festival, National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, The Lantern Tour, and prestigious venues such as Great American Music Hall, Slims and Golden State. “Stranger in the Barn” is based on Avery’s real-life experiences on the family ranch.
