UNLV College of Fine Arts Dean Nancy J. Usher is pleased to announce the new director of the School of Music, Dr. Islea Butler. He will start the role on his July 1, 2023.
Butler is currently Dean of Music at Valdosta State University. Before he was appointed to Valdosta State University, he served as Dean of the Music Department at North Carolina Central University. He has taught in a variety of leadership positions and teaching positions at colleges and universities across the country. Butler has also had an illustrious career as a jazz trombonist and conductor. He received his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from the Eastman School of Music and a PhD in Music from Rutgers University.
