(CNN) — The 18-year-old shooter who shot dead three people and injured several others, including two police officers, in Farmington, New Mexico on Monday, the deputy police chief told reporters.
Police did not say what weapon the shooter used before he was killed by responding officers. Farmington Police Deputy Chief Barrick Crumb said four officers responded to multiple 911 calls about the shooting around 11 a.m. in Montana.
Crumb said they found “a chaotic scene of male subjects actively firing at individuals” in the neighborhood.
The deputy director said nine people were shot dead in addition to the shooter, but declined to say whether that included three dead civilians and wounded law enforcement officers.
Crum said it was unclear whether the shooter broke into the home, citing the preliminary nature of the investigation. Police are trying to figure out why the shooter was in the area, he said.
A Farmington police officer and a New Mexico police officer were shot and are being treated for injuries in hospital. Officials say their condition is stable.
Crum did not disclose the identities of the victim or the shooter. He said police will hold another press conference on Tuesday afternoon.
