Famed Singer-Songwriter Gabriel Kahane to Perform in Hattiesburg

The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) School of Music Connoisseurs Series presents celebrated singer-songwriter, composer and multi-instrumentalist Gabrial Kahane on April 21 at 7:30 PM at Intermezzo @ Woods Gallery.

“Gabriel tells stories through his songwriting and delivery, bringing another refreshing flavor to our Connoisseurs series,” said Dr. Kimberly Davis, audio professor and event organizer at Southern Miss . “He is a unique and contemporary vocal performer with a musical style that we have never hosted before. Our diverse music community has students with eclectic musical interests. But I think his style will appeal to students and community friends who share his multi-faceted musical vision.”

Kahane is a musician, a storyteller, and his work is inspiring. His latest release as a singer-songwriter is “Magnificent Bird” (Nonesuch Records), a meditation of grief and gratitude written during the chaotic months leading up to the 2020 election.

Highlights of the 2022-23 season include the premiere of the folk opera “The Right to Be Forgotten” by the Oregon Symphony Orchestra and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Recital at Southbank Centre, London. Performed with the Danish String Quartet. Premiere of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra’s Residential Oratorio “Emergency Shelter Acceptance Form.”

Kahane’s album & stage spectacle “The Ambassador” was produced at the 2014 BAM Next Wave Festival under the direction of Tony Award winner John Tiffany. This work was followed by Book of Travelers, a chronicle of the composer’s railroad journeys after the 2016 election, performed on his BAM in 2017 and released as an album on his Nonsuch in 2018. it was done.

Gabriel’s creative collaborators range from Phoebe Bridgers, Paul Simon, Sylvain Esso, Chris Schiele and Sufjan Stevens to Caroline Shaw, Anthony McGill, Pekka Kuusisto and the Attacca Quartet. A recipient of the 2021 Charles Ives Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Kahane recently moved to Portland, Oregon to live with his family and begin his second term as Creative Chair of the Oregon Symphony Orchestra.
