Acclaimed Indigenous vocalist Emma Donovan and Melbourne rhythm combo The Putbacks will perform at the Castle Theater at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center on April 8 at 7:30 p.m. Makes his Maui debut.
Tickets will go on sale online at 10am today.
described as “The Voice of Australian Soul Music” Emma Donovan and The Putbacks burst onto the Australian scene with their album. “breaking dawn” According to a MACC news release, the project was born out of Donovan and the band’s shared love of American classical soul music and Aboriginal Australian protest music.
Donovan grew up singing church songs with his grandparents on the north coast of New South Wales. Her first secular gig was singing with her mother and her five uncles in her family band, The Donovans. Throughout her career, she has toured and recorded with many Australian music industry mainstays and was part of Black Her Arm Her Band her project.
A rhythm section of drums, bass, guitars, keyboards and percussion, The Putbacks takes its cues from the great American house bands of the soul studios of the 60’s and 70’s.their style “Dancefloor fire continues to cinematic interludes, from finely-constructed music to free improvisation.” According to a news release.
Concert tickets are available at MauiArts.org for $35, $50, and $65 plus applicable fees.
