Spotify kicks off its 50th anniversary celebration of hip-hop by announcing the ranking of the 50 greatest hip-hop beats of all time. The song produced and performed by West Coast icon Dr. Dre made it to number one.
Dr. Dre’s “Still Dre,” featuring Snoop Dogg, beats Mobb Deep’s “Shook Ones, Pt.” II. The rest of the Top 5 included The Clipse’s ‘Grindin’ (No. 3) and The Notorious BIG’s ‘Who Shot Ya?’ (4th) and Lil Wayne’s ‘A Milli’ (5th).
Additionally, Dr. Dre put another song in the top 15 of Spotify’s 50 Greatest Hip-Hop Beats. The Aftermath Entertainment label founder’s collaboration with Snoop Dogg, “Nuthin ‘but a’ G’ Thang,” earned him No. 12.
Brooklyn-raised billionaire Jay-Z and Chicago-raised The Sloan partner Kanye West also put multiple songs on the scoreboard. Ye’s self-composed song “Power” missed out on the top five at No. 6.
Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “N##### in Paris,” produced by Hitboy, reached number 14. Additionally, Spotify named Jay’s Timbaland-produced “Big Pimpin'”, featuring UGK, at #17 of the best hip-hop beats in cultural history.
Spotify’s 50 Greatest Hip-Hop Beats playlist has plenty of Southern representation. In addition to Louisiana’s Lil Wayne, Texas natives Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Slim Thug and Travis Scott made the top ten.
Mike Jones’ “Still Trippin'”, featuring Paul Wall and Slim Thug, secured the number eight spot on Spotify’s charts. Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode” featuring Drake topped the charts, followed by “Still Trippin'” at No.9.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Missy Elliott is the highest-scoring lead female artist. “Get Are Freak On” rounded out the top ten at number ten. Lil’ Kim contributed to No. 7 with Puff Daddy and the Family’s “It’s All About the Benjamins (Remix).”
The Notorious BIG also appeared on the track “It’s All About the Benjamins (Remix),” which saw the late host reach the Top 10 twice. Additionally, 27-year-old Chief Keef became the youngest artist on the list with “I Don’t Like,” featuring Lil Reese, reaching number 50.
Producers include Dr. Dre & Melman (“Still DRE”), Havoc (“Shook Ones, Pt. II”), The Neptunes (“Grindin'”), Sean “Puffy” Combs & Naseem Myrick ( “Who Shot Ya?”) and Bangladesh (“A Milli”) dominated the top five.
