(CNN) A Florida, DoorDash delivery woman was attacked and kidnapped before being rescued by her family and a male suspect has been arrested, police said.
On the night of April 18, the driver was about to deliver to a Residence Inn in Tampa when an armed man (identified as Joseph Killins, 38) approached and shoved him back into the car at gunpoint. According to a Tampa police news release, he drove her to another location more than six miles away, where he sexually assaulted her.
When the man first confronted the delivery driver, the victim had AirPods in his ears and was on the phone with his girlfriend, who realized the robbery was taking place, police said in an initial news release. The family then called the police, who were dispatched to the hotel.
The victim’s family, who had been tracking her phone, arrived at her location and rescued her from the vehicle, officials said.
Tampa Police said in a news release that the suspect “fired multiple times, one at a woman in her 20s who was a family member of the victim’s girlfriend, and then fled the scene.”
Police said the two victims were taken to a nearby hospital, but their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
The following morning, Killins allegedly threw a woman to the ground, beat her, and stole her backpack, according to Tampa Police.
Detectives investigating the alleged robbery were led to Killins’ location in Tampine, where “items related to the April 18 investigation were recovered,” police said.
Killins was then arrested late Friday night and charged with kidnapping a DoorDash delivery driver and battery, among other charges.
“This criminal is now off the streets thanks to the tireless efforts of all Tampa Police Department employees and the support provided by members of our community,” said Interim Tampa Police Chief. “My thoughts are with the victim and I hope this arrest will bring them some comfort in knowing they will face justice for the crimes they committed.”
Killins was charged with armed kidnapping, armed robbery, armed sexual assault and aggravated assault with a weapon in the April 18 incident, officials said. Police say he faces another robbery charge in his April 19 incident.
DoorDash spokesperson Julian Crowley said in a statement: “We are appalled by this heinous and abhorrent crime. No one should have to endure something so horrifying. We are here to support Dasher in any way we can.” We appreciate the work of the Tampa Police Department in holding the perpetrators accountable and have a strong hope that justice will be served.”
