Washington (CNN) Democratic Rep. Lo Khanna of California won Sunday the competitive Democratic primary to fill the seat of outgoing Sen. He announced that he would choose to support the legislators.
“Despite much enthusiasm from Bernie, I have concluded [Sanders’] Guys, the best place, the most exciting place, the place of action, the place of deserving, it’s the House where I serve as a Progressive,” Khanna told CNN’s Jake Tupper in “State of the Union.”
“And I co-chaired Barbara Lee’s Senate campaign and am honored to endorse her today. We need a strong anti-war senator, and she will fill that role.”
Democratic candidates filling Feinstein’s seat also include Rep. Adam Schiff and Rep. Katie Porter, who announced their candidacy earlier this year. Khanna has previously expressed interest in running for the vacant seat.
Lee, who announced his candidacy last month, is a member of the Democratic leadership in the House, co-chair of the Democratic Operating Committee and former chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus.
Throughout her time in Congress, Lee has served as co-chair and whip of the Progressive Caucuses.
If elected, Lee would become the only black female senator to serve in the House and the third in U.S. history.
Lee, Khanna said on Sunday, Lee “is a unique voice. She was the only vote against the endless war in Afghanistan. She opposed the war in Iraq very strongly. She opposed the war in Yemen.” You worked with me to try to stop the war on the United States, empower resolutions, and frankly, Jake, representation is key, there are no African American women in the United States Senate. ”
Currently, Lee is at a disadvantage compared to his well-funded rivals. She had just $52,000 in cash on her hand entering 2023, but Schiff stockpiled more than $20 million and Porter more than $7.4 million at the end of the year, according to FEC filings.
In California’s primary election system, all candidates run on the same ballot, and the top two candidates advance to the general election, regardless of party.
