Perth indie pop band Death by Denim have put a lot of effort into their new EP. my house is a club5-song collection coming a year later moon bow, the quartet’s second album, which includes the singles “Draped in Vapour”, “Magic Daisy” and “My House is a Club”. The latter is named after the party house shared by lead vocalist Nick Iliadis and lead guitarist Palle Mazzura.
The EP is DIY from start to finish, with the band members responsible for pre-production, cover artwork, music video and social media rollout. Here, Iliadis, Mazura, bassist George Gunson and drummer Hamish MacArthur my house is a club And the benefits of operating in such an independent manner.
Death by Denim – “Magic Daisy”
1. Pre-production
Death by Denim: Before recording an EP at Debaser Studios, we decided to spend a little extra time figuring out exactly what we needed for the song. Both George and Palle have considerable experience working with music production software such as Pro Tools and Ableton. This is useful during the pre-production stage of new music. Everyone has a moderately polished demo to get the feel before the band tries to play the song together in the room.
We built a makeshift rehearsal room in Palle’s house and perfected the song. Recorded on the Zoom Handy, each song was recorded multiple times with different sections, improving each rehearsal. From there, the song was recorded section by section into the software and each instrument was placed under the microscope.
I did this knowing that going into Debaser might bring to mind what I thought I knew about the new song. So the more prepared, the better.

2. Singles artwork
Death by Denim: Our bassist and synth player George has used Photoshop to create some of the graphics in the past, but this time he created all the artwork for the EP himself. We’ve always struggled to find a consistent feel when it comes to the artwork, so that was the main goal of the project. is ready.
Over the last few years, George’s design skills have evolved to the point where we use him as our preferred source of artwork and promotional materials. It’s not even just a single JPEG. With the different mediums one artwork goes through (Spotify Canvas, Facebook artwork, Instagram stories, Instagram square crops, etc.), it helps to have a vision from the beginning.
We gravitate towards real photos for artwork. So we start with a photo shoot to see how George can apply layers and titles in Photoshop. But he also creates quirky things from scratch.
3. Music video
Death by Denim: In the past, I dabbled in making DIY music videos. Our first was “Tattoo” a few years back. It didn’t turn out the way I had hoped, but I knew that with a few DSLRs and camcorders, I could shoot a lot of scenes and bring it all into Adobe Premiere, and it would work. I understand.
We haven’t strayed too far from this line of thinking, but again, George really hands over the production and editing of the video. Stocks of cameras and other film equipment are also increasing. All three of his videos for us were shot and edited by George, and the rest of the guys helped with the lighting, smoke his machine, secondary his camera, and other small details.
The main shots for ‘Magic Daisy’ were shot in a small forest near Mandering, about an hour away from Perth. “This is what a band does,” he said after shooting the song’s chorus in the dark, before finding himself dancing around a large tree. We also completely covered a room in Palais’ house with green screen material and live scene shots.
George was able to use effects and lens flares to keep each video consistent while also giving each video its own flavor. This works best if one video was shot in the woods and another in a rented photo studio. Different locations don’t necessarily make a big difference in the feel of the final product.
4. Character creation
Death by Denim: There’s a lot of freedom you can take when you’re doing it yourself. Often before a gig, photo shoot, or video, we discuss each kit and whether or not we want to match it.in order to my house is a club Artwork, we wished it was a little more there.
A friend of ours bought these green masks and they became a regular joke whenever the crew got together. Decided to wear one to capture some of this madness. There were definitely plenty of inspirations derived from Jim Carrey mask.
The song itself was inspired by Nik and Palle’s share house, which hosted too many parties this summer, but wanted the visual to relate more to our own brand of weirdness. We loved the idea of a character going into party madness every time he put on a mask. This is not far from reality.
5. Social Media
Death by Denim: We’ve tried to be at the forefront when it comes to social media. and engagement to build a little bit. No off-limits ideas. Encourage everyone to suggest fresh ways to reach your fans.
For “Magic Daisy”, we devised a game of “whose chorus is this?” We had several bands sing the chorus of the song based purely on the lyrics without hearing the original. We were thrilled with our entry and it’s been a very fun few weeks on Instagram.
It can be a bit daunting to organize everything strategically, but it’s no surprise for bands these days to have an abundance of social media promo clips leading up to their releases. More, better, and our beautiful admin team are always there to help us keep to our posting schedule.
Ultimately, it’s our responsibility to show authentic characters and personalities on each platform.
