Screen Rant: How did you decide to change from novel to screen?
Article by David West: This novel is a great starting point for this series. What I liked about it as a TV series is that it explores it in different ways, through different characters and different experiences, depending on where they are in life and how happy they think they are with their lives. With this series, we wanted to take the longest possible story path. Books have endings, books have machine descriptions. For our series, we developed a mystery instead. Built on the mysteries of the Morphomachine, it expands on the mythology and allows you to go to as many different locations as possible in the story.
Is it part of a technology update? If the machine asks for my social security number and fingerprints, the first thing I do is think I’m ready for identity theft. How do you navigate people’s reactions to it in modern times, as opposed to the small town aspect where characters might not even think about it?
David West Read: I love stories set in small towns. This also feels very specific to small towns where there is something new and very exciting.
The fact that people have to give up their social security numbers and fingerprints to reach their potential is, to me, a constant sacrifice of security and privacy for what we think will make us happy. Felt like the modern world. .
I loved developing the design of the machine itself. This butterfly design is a very rich symbol — not only because of the butterfly effect, but also because the Blue Morpho Butterfly is this incredibly vibrant blue color that is all a reflection of light. . Does the idea of this machine and its fantasies actually have any truth or do you just want to believe that it is? It was all really interesting to me.
I love Gabrielle Dennis and Chris O’Dowd together. How were they cast and what did they bring to the off-page characters?
David West comments: Casting is an important part of this show. They’ve helped me shape these characters. They bring honesty and truth to their characters and are able to embrace these changes in tone. It’s so much fun one scene and heartbreaking the next. I feel like I am building a small family in Deerfield.
