San Diego State Senior Guard Darrion Trammell was a key figure in two key moments in the Aztec Elite Eight’s win over Clayton on Sunday.
The first was a controversial foul on the Blue Jays’ Ryan Nemhard in the final minute of the game. The call sent Trammell to the foul line with his 1.2 seconds left in the game, missing his first attempt to tie it at 56–56.
However, Trammell hit the second of two free-throw attempts to give the Aztecs a 57–56 lead, which they won after a lengthy review after Clayton’s inbounds attempt.

After the game, CBS sideline reporter Evan Washburn interviewed Trammell and SDSU coach Brian Dutcher. That led to a touching moment for Trammell, who broke down in tears while talking about what this moment meant to him.
“It’s all about believing in yourself. Grandpa, my late brother, I’m just doing it for them.”

Washburn then asked Trammell to explain where his feelings were coming from following the Aztecs’ historic victory.
“It’s just a blessing to be here and have the chance to break free throws for my brothers and celebrate,” Trammell said. “I’ve dreamed of this my whole life.”
Trammell, who had 12 points and one assist in the game, will be playing for the Aztecs for the first time after two seasons in Seattle. He did not have the department I offered when he graduated from St. He Ignatius (San Francisco) in 2018.
His college basketball career has been a winding one, spending a year in grad school at Golden State Prep (Oakland, CA) in 2019 before starting his junior career at City College of San Francisco. Then in Seattle he played for two years before finally he transferred to SDSU before the 2022-23 season.
Considering the road to San Diego State, it’s no wonder Trammell got emotional considering he led the Aztecs to a historic Final Four Run in his first season.
