Removing gloves after a fight is usually a sign that someone is trying to call it a career.
That seemed exactly what Clay Guida was doing after making a one-sided decision on Rafa Garcia in his opening match on the main card of UFC Kansas City. Guida took off his gloves and remained in the cage during Garcia’s interview, approaching him assuming Daniel Cormier was going to give the UFC Hall of Famer a chance to announce his retirement from the sport. .
Instead, Cormier heard the exact opposite.
“I cheated you guys,” Guida said to the crowd. I want to because it was a great performance by him.”
Guida then went on to provide several Happy Birthday messages, including one addressed to his mother, who was present at his fight on Saturday.
That heartfelt message may have made Guida look like a good son, but the UFC president wasn’t one bit happy that the broadcast was hijacked under false pretenses, so he decided to give Dana White a shot. I didn’t love him.
“To be honest, it actually pissed me off,” White said when responding to Guida’s fake. “No, it pissed me off.
“like [Clay Guida], he’s a nice guy, but is he faking his retirement so he can wish someone a happy birthday? “
Guida wasn’t alone, as Bill Algeo did something similar right before shooting the Kansas City crowd.
In his case, Algeo had just finished off TJ Brown with a rear-naked choke submission to cap off his Fight of the Night performance, so he was already in his post-match interview.
Algio, who hails from just outside of Philadelphia, used Mike’s time as a small way to return the favor after the Eagles lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl.
Guida, on the other hand, had only a chance to speak as all the signs were directed at him wearing gloves. Instead, he was trying to score an interview for himself.
“We’re doing a live event here. You know what I mean?” White said. “I wasn’t happy about it.
“He was saying happy birthday to someone or something. It wasn’t good.”
