PITTSBURGH (KDKA)–The Pittsburgh City Council will meet next week with Mayor Ed Gainey’s nominee for police chief Larry Sirot.
The public meeting is Thursday at 10:00 am.
Mayor Ed Gainey Last week announced Silot as his choice results of a national search.
After retiring from Pittsburgh, Mr. Sirot was appointed mayor of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in 2021, but his tenure was short-lived. He was fired after being accused of reverse discrimination promoting minority officers over white male officers.
Sillot, who was promoted to the board for his merits, said he filed a $10 million lawsuit against Fort Lauderdale for defamation and wrongful termination just last month. It’s unclear how the lawsuit will affect his ability as mayor of Pittsburgh.
Silot said he will soon be working on a four-point plan: restructuring and reassessing the entire police department to develop strategies aimed at curbing gun violence; focus on and support, strengthen police-community partnerships, and prioritize safety and quality of life for all residents.
The public interview is available on Comcast Channel 13 or Verizon Channel 44.
