Progressive activist and university professor Cornell West announced Monday his presidential campaign with a third party, the Populist Party, led by a former campaign staffer for Senator Bernie Sanders.
“I participate in the quest for truth, I participate in the quest for justice, and the presidency is just one of the ways I pursue truth and justice that I have tried to do all my life,” said Dr. West. said. Campaign video posted on Twitter.
Dr. West said in the video that he decided to run as a third party candidate because “no party wants to tell the truth about Wall Street, Ukraine, the Pentagon or Big Tech.” He called former President Donald J. Trump, the frontrunner for the Republican nomination, a “neo-fascist,” and President Biden a “milk-toast neoliberal.”
Dr. West has taught at Yale, Princeton, and Harvard Universities and is currently Professor of Philosophy at Union Theological Seminary. He is known as a progressive activist, including his sharp criticism of former President Barack Obama.
His campaign video highlighted a list of issues including wages, affordable housing, abortion rights, universal health care, climate change and “destroying American democracy.”
The People’s Party was founded by Nick Branagh, who campaigned for Sanders’ Democratic presidential nomination in 2016, but later left the party. The party tried to endorse Sanders after the 2016 election campaign, but Sanders refused to engage him and will seek the Democratic nomination again in 2020.
“Have you got what you need? We’ll see. But some of us will go to battle,” Dr. West said in the announcement video, leaning over the camera and saying, “Fight. ” he said while exaggerating the syllable. “Smile in style and take the downswing.”
