Rip Daman Badria, an engineering manager at a tech giant, shares his story in hopes of educating other tenants in India’s IT capital, where renting is becoming increasingly difficult.
According to one expert who moved to the city last year, clearing an interview with a landlord in Bengaluru is more difficult than passing an interview at Google.
In a LinkedIn post, Badria wrote that when she moved to Bangalore from the US in 2022, she faced stiff competition in renting.
Landlords were interviewing many potential tenants as post-COVID rental demand surged. Badria said he starred in one, but it “failed miserably.”
“I cleared Google interviews, but failed tenant interviews in Bangalore,” he wrote. It was an awakening moment.”

Just like job seekers ask recruiters for feedback, Badria went back to interviewers to learn why she was rejected.
Experts said they received transparent feedback from landlords.
“They believed I was more likely to buy a house given that I worked at Google.”
Badria used this experience to prepare for her next home-hunting interview. He said he was successful on his second try and told the LinkedIn network to seek advice.
In his comments section, many suggested that Badria create documents, surveys, or even write a book on rental tips.
“It’s on my to-do list,” he replied to one comment.
Bangalore experts share how they go through rigorous scrutiny during the home-hunting process.
One tenant was asked to show her LinkedIn profile before coming to the location. Besides, he was asked to send a short introduction.
Bangalore rents are rising, especially in gated societies. Prices for two of his BHK apartments range from Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000 in areas such as Koramangala, HSR Layout and around Indira Nagar.
“Prices for these apartments have jumped by 40 percent, even 50 percent in some cases, over the last few years,” Sunil Singh of real estate broker Realty Corp told Moneycontrol.
With limited land available for development, property prices in Bangalore city center have surged compared to the pre-pandemic period.
