Charleston, South Carolina (WCBD) – The Charleston County School District is one step closer to hiring a new superintendent.
On Monday, the CCSD Board began the first round of candidate interviews during an executive session of its special convening meeting. The session lasted nearly six hours.
Joy Brown, a parent of CCSD students and an education advocate, said she has been following the process closely.
“We have a very large district, not only geographically but also socio-economically diverse, so there is a big job for them. There are a lot of people with needs,” Brown said of the future superintendent.
The search for the next Superintendent of Education began in the fall. Last month, the board of directors elected BWP and Associates to assist in this process. The company then conducted a series of community engagement sessions.
“I felt like they really listened and took into account what we had to say to learn about our constituency. What makes you a good candidate,’ said Brown. “So it was really nice to be part of that process.”
Current superintendent Don Kennedy has led the district since taking office as interim superintendent in January 2022, and was formally appointed superintendent last June.
President Kennedy recently said he plans to apply for re-employment, but News2 is still awaiting details of the official interview process.
Teachers, meanwhile, said they knew what to expect from the next leader.
“We need to pay our teachers enough to live in the areas they teach. It’s about restoring discipline in our classes and classrooms,” said Jodie Starlings, an eighth grade teacher at CCSD.
Interviews are scheduled to continue on Tuesday and Thursday. According to the CCSD website, the board will announce the candidates on May 30.
