(NEXSTAR) – Celine Dion has canceled the remainder of her Courage World Tour as she recovers from an ongoing health problem, her team announced Friday.
Dion’s Courage World Tour has already faced a number of setbacks and postponements since it opened in September 2019, including a lengthy hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All rescheduled tour dates were also postponed or canceled entirely until Dion recovered from “severe and persistent muscle spasms” that were later found to be symptoms of stiff-person syndrome.
Since March 2020, the tour has not yet resumed.
In an announcement Friday, Dion confirmed that he will cancel all remaining rescheduled dates through 2024.
“I’m so sorry to let you down again,” Dion said in a statement posted on her official website. “I’m working hard to get my fitness back, but touring can be very difficult even when you’re at 100%. As much as it hurts, it’s best to cancel everything now until I’m really ready to get back on stage again.I just want you all to know that I’m not giving up…and again. I can’t wait to meet you!”
Dion first revealed her diagnosis of stiff-person syndrome, a rare neurological disorder, in December 2022.
“I wasn’t ready to say anything before, but now I’m ready,” the Canadian singer said in a video posted on social media. “I’ve been battling my health issues for a long time, and it’s been really hard for me to face these challenges and talk about everything I’ve been through.”
According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), stiff-person syndrome is “characterized by fluctuating stiffness of the muscles of the trunk and extremities, hypersensitivity to stimuli such as noise, touch, and emotional distress; Relieves spasms.”
The disease also causes impairment of walking and movement and is associated with an increased risk of falls.
Treatment includes intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg), muscle relaxants, and analgesics, but there is no known cure.
In a press release on Friday, Dion’s publicist confirmed her intention to resume performances, saying, “Soon… but the time is simply not now.”
