Share “The story itself is very compelling…it’s all about healing” Caroline B. Marx He talked about the charm of Hulu’s new series “UnPrisoned” about a daughter who tries to reconcile with her father who has just finished 17 years in prison. The costume designer appreciated that the show was “based in reality” and said it drew inspiration from the lives of its creators. Tracy Macmillan — and that is “socially relevant.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Kerry Washington Starring as Paige, a relationship therapist welcoming her father Edwin (Delroy Lind) to her home despite the effect his imprisonment had on her as a child. Marx worked closely with her actress to select Paige’s fashion colors, which McMillan described to her as “Minneapolis but via Brooklyn.” The author considered Page to be “fashion-conscious, but grown-up,” but Tracy herself “wears no color. She just likes black, white, and navy.” This was “a hurdle at first,” but as the costume designer puts it, “Comedy is about color, and that’s what I’ve learned over the years.”

One of the standout aspects of “UnPrisoned” is the young Paige she plays. Jordyn Mackintosh, commenting on the choices an adult Paige is making while wearing an exact replica of Washington’s costume. Marx explains that this recurring part of the show was “a lot of fun, but also very challenging”. Because “everything had to be cut out of adult-sized clothes or really remade” for McIntosh. The shoes were particularly difficult to replicate as they “do not make heels for children”, requiring costume designers and their teams to “hand paint or recreate and embellish those shoes.”
Paige certainly seems to have inherited some of her fashion sense from her father. For example, in the premiere, the audience sees Edwin visiting his old girlfriend Nadine (Brenda Strong) tried on old fur coats and jewelry. “Edwin is modeled after Tracy’s father,” Marx said. says. However, Edwin spent 17 years in prison, so all of his outfits are from circa 2004, and the costume designer researched that year’s style. Lind also took significant input into the character’s appearance. “He really wanted an earring that dangled over his left ear,” recalls the costumer.

Bringing Edwin into Paige’s home had a great impact on her son Finn (Fali Rakoto Havana), especially in clothing. As Marx explains, “As time goes on, you’ll see more and more colors throughout the series,” she says, adding that there are “subtle clues” in the costumes that “people are getting happier.” is incorporated. Regarding Finn’s look, the costume designer said, “We wanted to incorporate a bit of anime and manga into the T-shirt design. By her side, Finn “becomes more accepting of herself and a more complete person,” she says.
Marx’s favorite scene of the season appears in the third episode, “Are You My Mother Wound?” There Paige hosts her family dinner with Edwin, Finn, Nadine, and her foster parents, and includes a fantasy disco scene. “Edwin’s outfit, white suit, black shirt…and Little Page certainly played a bit of an homage to Saturday Night Fever. [a] It’s a little hymn to ‘Flashdance,'” explains the designer. The costumer thinks the “spectacular” look that stands out on set is Paige’s one-sleeved silver disco dress. In the sixth episode, “Nigourence,” she explores what patches the local sheriff wore at the time to depict Edwin’s childhood in rural Alabama in the 1950s. , We also conducted historical research. She calls this poignant and harrowing work “wonderful.”
