Southern California’s Initiate have felt like one of hardcore’s most promising bands for years. Today, the Initiate fulfills all its promises. After the 2018 LP Before long… And their amazing 2020 EP lavenderInitiate to release new album cerebral circus, and it’s insanely good.I’m gonna bang this thing for a while length time.
Initiate can always play very fast and hard, with frontwoman Crystal Pak giving the most moving scream. But on this album, Initiate combines that ferocity with a sense of soaring melodies. This record has an acoustic guitar. It has a chorus that sounds like an arena-sized pop-punk band. Initiate’s overall style is quite different from Turnstile’s gigantic life-affirming bounce. These tracks are angry and emotionally devastating, but they’re also warm and relatable on a fundamental level. I’m not sure how Initiate struck that balance, but they really, really did.
