Drummer Bill Kreutzmann pulled out of Dead & Company’s The Final Tour this summer. The news was announced in a note on Social His media credited to Kreutzmann and Dead and his Coe bandmates Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and John Mayer.
“Every day, things change. After many lengthy discussions and good old soul searching, we are announcing that our brother Bill Kreutzman will not be joining us for our final summer tour,” said the keyboardist. Notes from Jeff Chimenti and members of Dead & Company began. Bassist Oteil Burbridge. “Bill wants you to know he’s fine and healthy and he’s not retired.”
“This is a creative direction to keep these songs alive and breathing in the way we each feel best to continue to honor the legacy of the Grateful Dead. “It’s the culmination of a transformation,” the message continued.
Dead & Company formed in 2015 and embarked on their debut tour that summer. Kreutzmann missed a number of shows in 2021 and his 2022 due to health issues including back and heart problems and his positive COVID-19 test. Jay Lane replaced Bill the Drummer on the show he missed. Today’s announcement made no mention of alternatives for his upcoming summer tour, which begins at his Jazz & Heritage Festival in New Orleans on May 6.
Bill Kreutzmann takes the stage with his Billy & The Kids ensemble for the Fleur De Dead concert at New Orleans’ Saenger Theater on April 27th. Grammy-winning guitarist and singer-songwriter Molly Tuttle was recently confirmed as a special guest on the show.
