BIA is officially “That Bitch”. On Friday, the Massachusetts artist released his latest single. This is a drill empowerment song produced by Timbaland. After a three-week lull, she’s back strong, gearing up for a slew of releases she says are “totally experimental.”
The cover art for “I’m That Bitch” was directly inspired by Missy Elliott’s 1999 album. from the real world, which saw the iconic rapper rocking a white button-up topped with a black tie and black corset, BIA’s version brings that same boss babe attitude. The cover, styled by Raya, features the artist rocking her earrings in long braids and hoops.
BIA’s new single not only commemorates the hip-hop legend through visuals, but also incorporates one of Missy Elliott’s classics. She acknowledged Timbaland made the decision, saying, “He said, ‘I love what you were doing on the drill. I want to do Missy’s ‘She’s A Bitch’ flip.” that was his idea. ”
“I’m That Bitch” is the follow-up to the final “SIXTEEN” released by BIA on March 6, where BIA raps: I come from a place where no one respects me. We weren’t broken, tell me how I trust you? I left mom’s house, bitch, I have nowhere to run She says of her work that inspired her to do so:
BIA’s journey in the music industry began in 2014 when she signed with Pharrell’s I Am Other label, and it’s been an interesting road since then. She first came to the public eye in 2016 when J. Balvin featured her in her “Safari.” Her biggest achievement came in 2020 when Nicki Minaj hopped on her BIA’s most popular track of all time, “WHOLE LOTTA MONEY (Remix).” BIA has long expressed her respect and admiration for Nicki Minaj, so when she was personally invited to her home, it exceeded all expectations.
This past year alone has brought many celebrations to the BIA. She got Russ’ opening slot on the tour, performing her viral smash hit “BEST ON EARTH.” The song was co-signed by Rihanna, who posted a video on her Instagram of her walking towards the song. Most recently, BIA headlined her first-ever Feelin’ Myself fashion show on Spotify, reminding people of her outstanding efforts in both music and fashion.
Complex briefly caught up with BIA at a nail salon in LA on the day her long-awaited new single was released. Below, we discuss her love for Missy Elliot, why she quit her smoking, and more.

Beer! You’ve come a long way since you first performed at The Echoplex in 2017. Do you feel like your dream is coming true?
I definitely feel like I’m living my dream.This whole trip was a little [like] Entrepreneurial spirit with its ups and downs mixed with everyday fun. Because when you’re doing something you really love, you’re always having fun.
I saw you Tweet that you are sober; how are you feeling now What made you stop drinking?
To be honest, I was tired of being dependent on substances. You don’t have to spend an extra half hour smoking before doing anything. I often say, “I need 30 minutes so I can roll it up. Hold on.” I’m always late or I always smell like weed. I didn’t want it anymore. I’m just reaching a new place.
I think tweeting honestly is very inspiring for you because it encourages people to do the same.
TRUE?and was in trouble [with] my diet. i didn’t eat I had to smoke before eating it, so I couldn’t finish it. I noticed a big difference in weight.Since I [been] Clean, I gained 10 to 15 pounds.
you look fine.
thank you i feel good I feel happy and comfortable. I eat all the time now. Why have I never been so hungry before? [Laughs.]
Let’s talk Timbaland and your new single. Tell us the story behind “I’m That Bitch”.
It’s so dope. I did some songs with Timbaland. He first said: She wants to do Missy’s “She’s A Bitch” flip.” That was his idea. They have homeboy Lil Rich and they do a lot together. He said, “OK, skip the beats.”they put a drill in it [and] Timbaland did his thing. he was really dope. It’s really dope.
What did you learn from working with him?
Timbaland is such a legend. He has so many gems and has dropped so many just by talking about him. One thing I really learned from him about him is that the only thing that matters is the music in the song. At the end of the day, that’s the only thing that matters, so make the best song you can.
Is that epic Missy Elliott-inspired cover art something you’ve always wanted to do? How did she influence you?
yes. Any time you flip through a song, you have to show some kind of respect. When I flipped through “CAN’T TOUCH THIS,” which is “My Milkshake Brings All the Boys in the Garden,” after Kerris’ flip, she wore the same outfit as Kerris in the video. Dior corset. Now Missy is an icon of original style. Aesthetically, no one does it better than Missy. she is a goat
She’s so perfect and perfect that it’s really hard to start over. If you do this, you should do it your own way, but show respect and respect for the original. That would be new in itself, wouldn’t it?
Did you send it to her before…?
i kinda [wanted] it’s a surprise [but] i wanted her to see it [then] “Do you like this?”
Do you remember how old you were when you found himr from the real worldAlbum (1999)?
I was 9 or 10 years old. Growing up listening to Missy, her videos were always the most memorable to me. Great for creativity. She had that little girl dancing in the video. She always had fire dancers, fire looks. All.
Do you think you got her co-signing/permission to sample “She’s That Bitch”?
i hope so. She supports it, so I’m really happy. Thank you very much. That’s what it takes to be a legend like her. I want them to be proud if I touch on what they’ve done. After all, I am as good as the people who opened the door for me. If they hadn’t opened the door for me, I wouldn’t be here now. I have to be respectful and respectful. I’m doing my best, so I hope and pray that they like it.
What was it like working with Missy on David Guetta’s Trampoline?
fire! I even mentioned her name in my poem: ‘Missy met me, they’re like, ‘Who’s sweating? ’” We saw her being honored at this year’s Grammy event. They were honoring her girlfriend, her Sylvia Rhone, Swizz Beatz… her many her legends. Where do you get your fashion inspiration from? Anyone in the hip-hop world?
A lot from the 90’s. 2000’s songs mixed with Fly His Girl elements. High fashion, runway, vintage mix.
Please tell us the story behind your recent single “SIXTEEN”. what job did you lose?
Yes, oh my god.But the crazy thing is I had a million regular jobs [before this]… I was a waitress, a bartender. I used to work at a shopping mall. I used to work packing groceries. I worked in a small bank of grocery stores. I have done so many jobs. I definitely said — I don’t want to say who because I still work with them. foot locker. I said to my boss, “Fuck you,” but my boss and I are like brother and sister. It can be said that he is an old boss of Foot Locker, like a big brother. We were cursing each other. “Damn, quit.” Then a week later he said, “I’m not quitting. I need this per hour.”
Made fun of the referee’s uniform?
no. Because in the old days, every respectable girl worked in a foot-her locker. It’s okay if you worked at Foot Locker.
I liked the line in “SIXTEEN”, “I played at the Hollywood Bowl and brought my label.” I was at Lasshaw. How was your moment on the big stage?
I liked it I have to play songs that I can’t usually play in front of such a large audience. What I love about Russ’ audience is [that] they really listen to you. They don’t just come to listen to hits, they come to listen to whatever you want to say. So I was able to make a record that I wouldn’t necessarily do on a festival stage. [which] Connect more with people. Like “MOTIONLESS” and “SAME HANDS”. Certain ones connect more.
You left RCA to become what Epic is today.how is your relationship with [Chair & CEO of Epic Records] Silvia Rhone and what it means to work with strong female executives.
I love Silvia Rhone. she is very grateful to her She is her family to me now, I love her. It’s so empowering to have such a powerful woman truly believe in you as Sylvia believes in me. she won’t change me she accepts me She believes in my vision It’s a dream come true with the label. What has she not seen to learn from someone like her? She has seen it all! To impress her, you have to be serious about it.
when will i get the album?
If the timing is right. But soon… we’re getting ready for summer.
you murmured: “I haven’t put out a great song yet, this shit is crazy.” What else can you expect from Vault?
