for the record I had the opportunity to speak with airmusic supervision of Andrea von Forsterfor giving us the inside scoop on how she and Ben helped bring the film to life through music.

Was there a way to use the soundtrack to enhance the narrative?

Ben has directed a wonderful film that is both visually and musically 80’s. There was a lot of good music at the time, so he used a lot of the songs in terms of the story. Are there any essential songs on the soundtrack?

Shortly after starting the process, Ben sent me his 1984 playlist as a starting point. The song selection evolved as we neared the final edit. Sometimes we decided we could exceed our original plans, and sometimes we had to change course due to budget constraints. “My Adidas” and “born in america‘ are discussed in the film, so we definitely wanted to keep them.

Also, since the film didn’t have a composer, they licensed existing scores from other ’80s films. I think it depends on how old you are. I’m not that far apart in age compared to Matt and Ben, so we have the same awareness of music. But if you are young, you may not know all the songs. So most of you know “Born in the USA”, but you may not know “Prove My Love” by Violent Femmes. Rufus And Chaka Khan’s “Ain’t Nobody” is also a great song that some people may know for the first time. There was a moment during the premiere when it was played and everyone in the theater started singing. It’s a very nice song.
