At least one person was killed and 28 injured when a roof collapsed during a concert at the Apollo Theater in Belvidere as a severe storm hit the community late Friday, officials said.
Five people were taken to hospital with serious injuries, 18 with moderate injuries and five with minor injuries after the venue’s roof collapsed, according to Belvidere Fire Chief Sean Shaddle. Officials said a tornado warning had been issued for the area around 7:45 p.m., 10 minutes before he collapsed.
Shadru described the rescue effort as a massive response consisting of a large number of police, firefighters, emergency medical services and bystanders who quickly stepped in to help the injured.
Both the theater and the building across the street suffered severe wind damage and were subjected to a “primary search” by first responders. An additional, more thorough search was conducted at both buildings late Friday.
NBC 5 spoke to one witness who said he went to help people trapped in the rubble as soon as the collapse occurred.
“Everyone tried to exit the entire venue through the fire doors. There was a lot of chaos, so I looked around and saw people in the rubble and tried to help as many people as possible.”
Taina Bergamaschi, a musician from the band Crypta, who played at the venue, wrote on Instagram after the collapse, “We are safe and sound… Tornado hit the venue and we lost our RV but we are fine.” I posted.
Bergamaschi said the band plans to release additional information.
