Since launch Spotify’s new AI DJ A few weeks ago in beta, our premium listeners in the US and Canada got the chance to experience personalization features in a whole new way. The love for DJs is already huge, both on the platform and on social media, but it’s not for 100% of users yet. On days when the user is tuning in, the fan spends 25% of his listening time DJing. And more than half of those who listened for the first time came back to hear him DJ the next day, and they’re coming back for more time. *
Today at Stream On, Spotify Co-President and Chief Research and Development Officer Gustav Soderström and Head of Cultural Partnerships at Spotify Xavier “X” JerniganVoice being the first model of DJ, took the opportunity to further highlight the new features. Using DJs to transform Spotify from a musical tool into a living, breathing, interactive music experience, we are reimagining how listeners can listen and discover the music they love.
What did it take to build a DJ? for the record Connected with some of the people behind the new feature, including our VP of Personalization Ziad SultanHead of Product Design for Personalization Emily GallowayProduct Director Gina Cresiand Head of Global Hits not a word Italian, To better understand the synergy between humans and technology that brought DJing to life.
Spotify boasts years of expertise in personalization. How did you leverage this to create a DJ?
Ziad Sultan: Personalization is central to what we do. When we ask listeners what they love most about Spotify, over 81% cite our personalization. Because we have a little secret sauce. It’s about combining cutting-edge technology with human passion and expertise.
I applied the same recipe to my DJ. The result is a deeply personalized and enjoyable music listening experience for each individual listener, on a scale the world has never really seen. Never before has listening felt so completely personal to every user. And it’s made possible by his trio of powerful combinations: Spotify’s personalization technology, generative AI from the world’s best music curators, and stunningly realistic AI voices that bring everything to life.
Tell us more about how you designed the experience.
Emily Galloway: DJing is a whole new way of listening, a whole new format, so there was no formula to follow when making decisions. “How do we take you on a journey of familiar and unfamiliar music?” “How do we evoke nostalgia?” “What does it mean to give context to listening to music? But most importantly, “how can we help fans and creators build deeper, more meaningful connections?” I’m really proud of where we’ve come in making personalization and AI more human than ever before.
We know our listeners are just as excited. We continue to see connection and discovery as the main themes of her DJing. We believe that when listeners hear commentary along with personal music recommendations, they’ll be proactive in trying something new or listening to songs they might otherwise have skipped. For Spotify, it brings us closer to our goal of creating deeper connections between artists and fans.
Why did you choose to use a human-like AI-powered voice for this experience?
Gina Qureshi: We know the human voice can help people form connections, but the same can be said for DJs. Human voices provide familiarity and immediate context, so we found it important to hear a human voice for users to develop a deeper connection with her DJ. Incorporating vocal features such as pacing, projection, emotion, and emphasis makes for an emotional and highly realistic DJ.
Acquired by Spotify last year Sonantic A unique patented algorithm makes all this possible. Sonantic is now Spotify’s dynamic AI voice platform that creates engaging, nuanced, and stunningly lifelike voices from text.
How do DJs leverage the expertise of music editors?
JJ Italian: DJ is built from human editing expertise combined with cutting-edge technology that is Spotify’s superpower. Our editorial team of hundreds of experts around the world knows music and culture inside and out, and we use this power to help tell the stories of our artists and better contextualize their songs. became. To help DJs build their knowledge and expertise, we created Writers’ Room with music experts, cultural experts, data his curators, screenwriters and generative AI. Adding to this context gives listeners a deeper connection and experience when listening to an artist or song. We are very much looking forward to making it available to our listeners!
Ziad Sultan: By putting generative AI technology in the hands of music professionals, you can expand your expertise like never before. Adopting the Writers’ Room approach ensures that your commentary is accurate, relevant, and enriches the product experience. We are very excited about this approach, based on years of experience combining human expertise and world-class technology. That’s how DJs help fans connect with their favorite artists and discover new ones.
