Columbus-based rock band BareFuzz are touring their sophomore album, Renegade, but not before playing in their hometown for the first time.
Drummer Derek Petrucci and bassist Adam Tuckett met as undergraduates at Otterbein University in 2016, but Petrucci said he had no intention of starting a band. After one self-titled album and two of his singles, Petrucci, Tuckett, percussionist Jason Weil, guitarist and vocalist Ryan Jones and Andy Morgan have announced April Fools’ Day in April. The premiere of “Renegade” will take place at Summit Music Hall at 2210 Summit St. This event is his 18+, with tickets on sale from $10 to $15 for him depending on tier level. Levi Brown’s guest his performance graces the show’s opening. His April Fuzz Day at Summit Music Hall opens at 8pm.
“We’re starting our tour with this show and we’re really excited to do it here in Columbus,” Petrucci said. “I think we’re ready to put on the best show ever here.”
Each member of the band grew up in central Ohio and grew up together through mutual friends, Petrucci said.
Based on classic rock and blues influences, each member brings something stylistically different to the table, said Maughan. Maughan said that while Tackett’s heavy progressive rock inspired him, Petrucci’s tastes range from electronic to grindcore.
“We bring in different things, but we meet somewhere in the middle and a lot of what we really agree on is classic rock,” Petrucci said. “It’s where all our flavors cross over.”
In the weeks leading up to the concert, BareFuzz released two singles, “Great Divide” and the classic “Renegade.” Maughan said the reaction to these releases has been encouraging and reaffirmed his move towards more structured songs after the more improvisational music of the past.
Jones said the positive response validated the band’s new approach.
“People have responded very well to it. It feels like the songwriting has grown more, the songs tell a little more story than they did in the past, and that’s what’s important,” Jones said. What’s important to me is that people can relate to your work.I want people to feel something.”
Some of the songs on the album are about four years old, but Petrucci said recording with Joe Viers at The Sonic Lounge just started in late 2022. He said Viers was integral to the recording process.
“We worked with him on our last record, a self-titled record, and he showed us how the process should work,” Petrucci said. rice field. “He’s very professional. He has a lot of experience and made us feel really comfortable.”
Recording “Renegade” was a step forward in maturing and perfecting the band’s sound, said Petrucci.
“The last time I went and recorded my first record, there was a point where I was a little exposed to myself. I was like, ‘Oh, some of these aren’t really finished. Some songs are played a certain way.’ But it doesn’t seem to play a strong role here,” said Petrucci. “This time, we were able to see for the first time what our blind spots are and make sure we are prepared for them.”
BareFuzz will be playing their entire sophomore album on Saturday, and according to Jones, the experience will allow the band to pay homage to where it came from. Morgan agreed.
“To be able to play in our hometown and put on a show for the people who have been there for us for the last five years, and to be around people who have been there for a really long time, It’s going to be really great. It’s special for us,” Morgan said. “We put on a good show and are really excited to share this new album.”
