BandLab Technologies has confirmed that their free DAW, Cakewalk by BandLab, is being discontinued. It will be replaced by his two new products, Cakewalk Sonar and Cakewalk Next, both of which you will have to pay for.
BandLab acquired Cakewalk from Gibson in 2018 and ditched the Sonar name. However, it is back with an updated DAW (Cakewalk Sonar), offering an updated UI and a range of continued feature development. Also compatible with legacy Sonar and Cakewalk by BandLab projects.
Cakewalk Next, meanwhile, is new music production software that promises “next-generation music-making tools designed to inspire creativity and streamline your workflow.” It’s currently in beta and you can request access from the Cakewalk website.
Cakewalk by BandLab is still available as a free download, but the FAQ on the BandLab website states that it will be “soon to be phased out”. While this will undoubtedly be a disappointment for users of the software, BandLab also states that it will “continue to provide community support and maintenance for Cakewalk by BandLab until both Cakewalk Next and Sonar are generally available.” The release dates for these two products are unknown at this time.
Elsewhere in the FAQ, BandLab states: “We will continue to provide community support and maintenance for Cakewalk by BandLab until Cakewalk Sonar is generally available. At some point after Sonar’s release, Cakewalk by BandLab will no longer be supported. Existing Cakewalk by BandLab users should: Please note that you can continue to use the software after Cakewalk Sonar is released.”
Regarding the new pricing strategy, Bandlab said: “Next and Sonar come in price points designed to meet the needs of a wide variety of customers.
