If you have an Audible subscription, you’ll be listening to audiobooks with spatial audio in no time.
In a press release, the company announced significant enhancements to the audio experience with the addition of Dolby Atmos. This new technology allows Audible subscribers to enjoy an immersive audio experience while listening to audiobooks. At launch, 40 originals are mixed in Dolby Atmos for subscribers to try out the listening experience.
Rachel Ghiazza, EVP and head of US content at Audible, said in a statement that the addition of Dolby Atmos gives creators “a powerful tool for creating exceptional audio content on Audible.” says it can.
“Our commitment to providing the best possible experience for our customers and the creators we work with is at the heart of everything we do at Audible. We are thrilled to bring the telling to our members and give creators powerful tools to create extraordinary audio content on Audible.”
All 40 titles will be available starting today, according to the company. The Atmos version works with Dolby Atmos enabled mobile devices on Android as well as iOS apps.
With today’s announcement, Audible became the first major audiobook company to bring Dolby Atmos to its audiobook tracks. In contrast, Apple Books has yet to bring spatial audio to its audiobook platform. This is surprising given that Apple has led the way in bringing spatial audio with Dolby Atmos to Apple Music.
As the race for spatial audio continues, one company is still far behind. That’s Spotify. The company promises that HiFi plans will still be available, but users have been waiting for this feature for years. The music streaming app also lacks Dolby Atmos spatial audio content yet.
Instead of going in that direction, Spotify seems to be leaning more towards music videos and video podcasts with its recent design announcements.
