(CNN) At least three people were injured in a shootout at a Delaware mall food court Saturday night, state police said.
At approximately 6:43 pm local time on Saturday, police were called to Newark’s Christiana Mall and found three people with gunshot wounds in the food court area. They were all taken to area hospitals, two of whom are in critical condition, said Delaware State Police Senior Cpl. Jason Hatchell.
Five others were also taken to hospital after “suffering various injuries unrelated to the shooting”.
No suspects in the shooting were in custody Saturday night, Hatchell said, adding, “It has not been confirmed how many suspects were involved. Investigators are actively working to identify the suspects.” ‘ added.
Hatchell said the shooting was not random.
“Investigators believe this was the result of an altercation between multiple suspects and at least one of the victims.
Because the investigation is still in its early stages, Hatchell said it was unclear whether either the victim or suspect had known each other before.
The shooting prompted law enforcement to crowd the scene, prompting police to evacuate and shut down the mall for a search and cleanup.
“There is no threat to public safety,” the corporal said late Saturday.
Investigators were gathering evidence, reviewing surveillance video and talking to witnesses on Saturday.
