Ashland, Oregon — Rogue World Music (RWM) has announced the artist line-up for the 2023 Ashland World Music Festival, taking place May 26-29 this year.
According to Rogue World Music’s news release, seven artists will be participating.
“The Ashland World Music Festival is unique in Southern Oregon,” said Ari Shriner, Trust Manager of the Oregon Cultural Trust. “(It) combines multicultural artist performance, exploration of the cultural context of art forms/art content, sharing of lived experiences, and opportunities to work with local artists in the community.”
According to the release, there will be 6 events in these 4 days, all free of charge.
- A percussion workshop will be held on May 26th from 5-6pm at Southern Oregon University’s Music Recital Hall. Residents will learn about the samba rhythm, its history, its place in Brazilian music, and how it is played.
- A musician talkback will be held on May 27th from 2-3pm at the Ashland Library. Blount will host a talkback about roots music history and diaspora.
- HeartBeat Stories takes place on May 27th from 5-7pm at the Litha Park Butler Bandshell. It is a talk session with the theme of “home”. We cover the story of Blount, Mendez, Verma, Carr, and her Precious Yamaguchi and Kamud Gokani of his community members.
- Park’s performances will take place May 28 from noon to 5pm at the Lisa Park Butler Bandshell. The event will feature Blout, Mendez, Verma, The Family Carr, The San Francisco Yiddish Combo, Malinka World Music Collective, as well as Food His tracks and family-friendly activities.
- The Plaza Community Dance will be held at Ashland Plaza downtown on May 28 from 5:30-7:00 pm, immediately following the performance at the park. Local Brazilian band Exá performs and members dance in the streets.
- The Soundwalk will be held in downtown Ashland on May 26, 27, 28 and 29 from 6am to 9pm. This allows you to wander freely through Ashland, listening to the music of participating musicians along with the business his window displays.
Musician Talkback and Plaza Community Dance events are new this year, according to the release.
Rogue World Music and the Ashland Parks and Recreation Commission worked together to produce the event, the release said. Other affiliated organizations include the Southern Oregon University School of Music, the Ashland Chapter of the Jackson County Library Service, and the Ashland Chamber of Commerce.
