‘An Interview with Gladys Bailin’ to show at Athens International Film + Video Festival

The Ohio University community is invited to a screening of the dance documentary film Interview with Gladys Balin, a collaborative project between the University Library and the School of Dance, on Monday, April 10th at 1:00 pm. His 2023 Athens International Film + Video Festival (AIF + VF) at the Athena Cinema in Athens, Ohio.

With over 2,200 films submitted to competition this year, university libraries and dance schools are honored to present ‘Interview with Gladys Balin’. The festival is his week-long event with over 235 films from over 41 countries around the world. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the festival.

This dance documentary highlights the lifelong achievements of dancer, choreographer, and Distinguished Professor of Dance at Ohio University Gladys Bylinstern. Born and raised in New York City, she choreographed and performed with avant-garde choreographer Alwyn Nicholas at her Playhouse on Lower Henry Street in Manhattan.

When Beilin studied with Nikolai in the late 1940s and early 1950s, he was experimenting with new forms of contemporary dance that emphasized the concept of abstract movement and gave equal importance to movement, sound and light on stage. rice field.

For over 20 years, Beilin performed and toured nationally and internationally as a freelance soloist with the Alwyn Nicholas Dance Company, the Murray Lewis Dance Company, and the Don Ledrich Dance Company before becoming a member of the Ohio Dance Department in 1972. The we. From 1983 she was director of the School of Dance until 1995, and in 1986 she became the first woman to be appointed Distinguished Professor at Ohio University. Balin has had a tremendous impact on the School of Dance and Ohio in general. Her creative and energetic dedication to what she must dance as an art form has inspired generations of dancers. It brought the school a national reputation.

In 2019, Bailing donated her collection of materials (now known as the Gladys Bailing Papers) to the university library. Documentation includes her 50+ year career in modern her dance.
