Rome (CNN) Pope Francis joked that he was “still alive” as he left a Rome hospital where he had been treated for a respiratory infection for the past few days.
He stopped to speak to journalists after being discharged from Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Saturday morning.
The Pope was in good spirits when answering CNN’s Delia Gallagher’s question about her mood, telling her:[I’m] I’m still alive! “
When asked Wednesday if he was scared because of respiratory problems, the Pope recalled what an “old man” told him after going through a similar situation.
“An old man older than me said to me after this situation: ‘Father, I did not see death, but I saw death coming. It is ugly. hey!””
Pope Francis, 86, was taken to Gemelli Hospital on Wednesday and given antibiotics to treat infectious bronchitis.
Pope, who had severe pneumonia in his youth and had part of his lung removed, had a recent medical history.
He is often seen with a cane and sometimes uses a wheelchair because of pain in his right knee. Last year he canceled trips to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. said he may have to miss a subsequent trip to Canada as well, unless he agrees to knee rest.
Frances also suffers from diverticulitis, a common condition that can cause inflammation and infection in the colon.In 2021, she had surgery to remove part of her colon.
The Vatican said the pope will attend Palm Sunday Mass in St. Peter’s Square.
