In a press release this week, BBB CEO Steve Bernas said fans should be careful not to fall for scams on the ticket marketplace.
“One of the first things to do beforehand is to beware of fake websites, tickets and merchandise,” he said in a statement. “You don’t want to wait months, pay hundreds if not thousands of dollars, and show up at the gate after your ticket turns out to be counterfeit.”
Bernas said the BBB received hundreds of complaints about ticket fraud for games, concerts and more in the last year and is urging fans to stay vigilant in 2023.
To reduce the threat of theft, BBB urges fans to:
-Purchase your tickets from the official website of the team or venue and carefully examine the URL as an internet search may show the fake site first.
– Fake websites offer tickets at low prices to trick fans into entering their credit card numbers.
– Only secure websites whose URLs start with “HTTPS” and have a padlock symbol in the address bar.
– Be careful when buying tickets on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or other free listings. Sites like this make it easy to submit fake tickets.
– Use secure payment methods, especially credit cards. Debit card, wire transfer or cash transactions can lead to money loss in case of fraud.
