RouteNote has partnered with Spotify to give artists access to a new marketing tool, Discovery Mode.
Spotify first announced Discover Mode in November 2020, and later announced beta details at Stream On in 2021. Over the next two years, Spotify expanded this feature to more labels, distributors and artists. At last week’s Stream On event, Spotify shared details about the tool and next steps.
As Spotify recently revealed, one-third of discoveries on Spotify occur through personalized recommendations in the context of algorithms, driving 16 billion artist discoveries each month. It’s the first time Spotify introduces an artist to listeners. Discovery Mode leverages these algorithmic sessions by taking into account the tracks you want to draw attention to, expanding your reach to grow your fan base. Spotify describes Discovery Mode as follows:
In Discovery Mode, artists and labels identify their preferred songs and the system adds that signal to its algorithms to determine a personalized listening session. This signal increases the likelihood that the selected song will be recommended, but it is not guaranteed.
But it only works if fans love it too. Consider. Harmony is everything.

Essentially, Discovery Mode boosts tracks in radio and autoplay sessions for listeners listening to similar music. Initial tests from Spotify were promising. On average, during his first month in discovery mode, the artist sees a 50% increase in saves, a 44% increase in users adding to his playlists, and a 37% increase in following.
Spotify is gradually rolling out a discovery mode for selecting artists on Spotify for Artists, allowing artists to decide which tracks to include in discovery mode. A detailed analysis of specific Discovery Mode listens is shown in the Spotify for Artists dashboard, with stats like listeners, streams, saves, playlist additions, intent rates, and Discovery Mode compared to his pre-campaign data. It shows. The campaign will start on the 1st of every month. Statistics are available on Spotify for Artists from the 11th.
There are some requirements for discovery mode, regardless of whether you or your rights holder have access. The song must have been on Spotify for at least 30 days and streamed via radio or autoplay within the last 7 days.
With the launch of Spotify for Artists, Spotify has released commission details for its marketing tools. Discovery Mode has zero initial cost. Spotify takes a 30% commission from streams generated within the context of discovery mode (currently radio and autoplay). Streams in all other regions are commission free. Unlike traditional marketing and advertising tools like Marquee, this gives artists access to discovery mode, regardless of budget.
