Arcangelo won the Belmont Stakes in New York for the 155th time, making history as the first female trainer to win the race.
Arcangelo’s victory on Saturday made Jena Antonucci the first ever female trainer to train Belmont winner. Antonucci is the 11th woman in racing history to train a contender for the third jewel of the Triple Crown.
Preakness Stakes winner National Treasure led most of the race, but Arcangelo closed in in the closing stages to take a historic win. Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano marked his first win at Belmont. Castellano previously won the Kentucky Derby riding a mage.
“I don’t know if I have words right now. It will take some time,” an emotional Antonucci said after the race. “We are so proud of this horse right now that we are trying to absorb all of this. Amazing.”
Arcangelo “won the heart of a champion,” she added.
According to the official Belmont website, the odds of winning Arcangelo were 7-1 as of Saturday morning. A 25-1 win for Il Miracolo was favorable.
