Gandhi has toured three US cities, including speaking at Stanford University in California and the National Press Club in Washington, DC.
Meanwhile, US parliamentary leaders invited Prime Minister Modi to address a joint parliamentary session later this month. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and other leaders announced the speech as “an opportunity to share a vision for India’s future and to discuss the global challenges facing both countries.”
Rahul Gandhi, the grandson of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, is a member of the Indian National Congress Party. He is seen as Modi’s main challenger in the upcoming 2024 elections.
“Modern India cannot exist without a constitution and democracy,” he said on Sunday. He also called for greater ties between India and the United States to offset China’s influence.
“One of the things we have to think about is the bridge between India and the US,” he said. “How do we meet the challenges posed by China?” he asked, citing issues of mobility and global energy supply in particular.
The National Congress defeated the Bharatiya Janata Party in recent state elections in Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka, which came after a series of state election losses after Modi took office as Indian prime minister in 2014. It is a thing. Gandhi currently holds no official office within the party. He abandoned the post of party leader following a crushing defeat to Modi’s Hindu nationalist party in the 2019 national elections, but supporters say recent results are likely to be implemented by May 2024. It is hoped that it will influence the national elections in 2018.
Gandhi suffered a major setback in March when a court found him guilty of mocking Modi’s surname in a criminal defamation case that led to him being expelled from parliament. If the conviction is not overturned by an appeals court, he could be disqualified from running for parliament for the next eight years. The conviction was triggered in connection with a speech he gave in 2019.
Gandhi, who is not related to Mahatma Gandhi, also cited the name of the assassinated Indian leader several times during his speech and praised his model of non-violence.
