A 25-year-old woman was shot dead and six others injured when gunfire erupted during a memorial service for a man who died in a car accident, Chicago police said.
CHICAGO–Police said a 25-year-old woman was shot dead and six others injured in a shooting early Sunday morning during a memorial service for a man who died in a car accident in Chicago.
Chicago Police Department Deputy Chief Adonald Gutierrez said gunshots rang out around 1 a.m. when a large crowd gathered around 1 a.m. to mark the fourth anniversary of the man’s death, according to WLS-TV. Stated.
Seven people were injured, including a 25-year-old woman who was pronounced dead in hospital. Six other shooting victims were hospitalized, one in a critical condition.
“They were celebrating outside and then something happened, an altercation happened and someone started shooting, or multiple people started shooting,” Gutierrez said at a news conference on Sunday.
He said he was still investigating how many shots were fired, but said the gunshots were fired by someone attending the memorial service.
Gutierrez said witnesses told police that an altercation preceded the shooting, which took place on a street in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood on the West Side.
Among the six other victims, a 29-year-old man was hospitalized in critical condition with a chest wound. The remaining five, a 17-year-old girl, a 28-year-old woman and three men aged 27, 28 and 29, were hospitalized in good condition, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
Police detectives are investigating the shooting and no one was in custody as of Sunday morning.
Mr. Gutierrez said detectives have located witnesses and are continuing their questioning. He urged anyone with information about the shooting to contact police and pass the information on to them.
