Sydney-based three-piece Middle Kids (Tim Fitz, Hannah Joy and Harry Day) are about to enter a new chapter in their career today with the release of their latest single ‘Bootleg Firecracker’.
In 2022, the band impulsively decided to travel to Eastbourne, England for six weeks of intensive recording sessions with noted producer Jonathan Gilmore (The 1975).
The goal is to transform their lo-fi demos into something fresh, dynamic and innovative, able to push the boundaries of traditional rock band formats to their sonic limits while retaining the essence of classic pop songwriting. It was to work with the producer.
“Bootleg Firecracker” is our first taste of new music from those intense sessions. The song features a beautiful finger-plucked acoustic loop paired with an edgy, looping drum groove never heard on the band’s previous work. Lead singer Hannah Joy’s honest lyrics explore the concept of the titular “bootleg” firecracker, which is explosive yet beautiful and also carries the risk of causing harm. The result is a warm, subtle and contemporary sound that showcases the band’s creative evolution.
Joy described “Bootleg Firecracker” as “a song about the power, magic, and risk of intimacy… It started out as an uptempo chorus about dancing, but Tim (Fitz – co-producer and bassist) slowed it down.” “So we came up with the idea of bootleg firecrackers. Fireworks can be dangerous and can be dangerous, but there’s something about a blast of light and heat that brings people together in a festive mood.” I think love is like that.”
The track also features artistic contributions from Middle Kids fans, who submitted voice recordings of their own fireworks displays, which are seamlessly woven into the song’s outro. This explosive theme is also reflected in the official video, directed by Toby Morris, featuring the company’s fireworks program used at Sydney’s legendary New York celebrations.
The band will also embark on ‘The Amplified Echoes’ tour with Jimmy Eat World and The Manchester Orchestra, beginning July 11th in Missoula, Montana and visiting New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston and Philadelphia. He also announced that he would participate in See below for a full overview of dates.
