Evgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Russian private military company Wagner, claimed in a video posted to the Wagner telegram group on Tuesday that an American was killed in the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, the site of a bloody battle.
Pro-Kremlin military blogger Alexander Simonov, who introduced the video, said: “We are advancing to Chancellor Wagner’s advance positions in the western region of Artyomovsk (Russian name for Bakhmut).”
The video was shot at night and appears to be the sound of a mortar attack. Soldiers shout. Mortars attack from the west. ”
Mr. Prigogine is seen inspecting the body, which he claims is a U.S. identity card.
CNN was unable to verify the authenticity of the documents and was unable to confirm the nationality of the bodies shown in the video. CNN will not release the names of the deceased until their identities have been verified.
“So we’re going to hand him over to the United States, put him in a coffin, and honorably cover him with the Stars and Stripes because he didn’t die in bed as a grandpa, he died in the war,” Prigogine said. worth it [death], right? ”
One soldier claimed to have returned the gun when the man died. Prigogine answers: He was killed in action, so I’ll give you the papers tomorrow morning and pack everything up, okay?”
Prigogine and Wagner’s group frequently post videos for propaganda purposes, often mixing real footage with propaganda claims. CNN has reached out to the US State Department for comment.
