SPOTIFY shuts down a spin-off app that many people have never even heard of.
Spotify Live was billed as a competitor to Clubhouse, allowing users to discuss music in live audio chat rooms.
The app has been downloaded over 500,000 times on Android alone.
But that alone wasn’t enough.
It’s been just over two years since Spotify bought the app under its former name, Spotify Greenroom, for $62 million.
Users can host up to 1,000 people in a virtual room at once.
Aside from the decline in popularity after Covid restrictions ended, most people simply didn’t even know the app existed.
“I hadn’t even heard of that other app,” one user said on Twitter.
“RIP Spotify Live, I forgot you even existed,” added another.
“Another audio streaming app bites the dust,” commented a third user.
The app notification says it will continue to work for now.
But at the end of April everything will be closed.
A company rep told Music Ally, “After a period of experimentation and learning about how Spotify users interact with live audio, we have decided to terminate the Spotify Live app.
“We believe there is a future for live fan-creator interaction in the Spotify ecosystem. But based on our learnings, it no longer makes sense as a standalone app.
“We had promising results for our artist-focused ‘listening party’ use case, and we will continue to investigate it to facilitate live interactions between artists and fans.”
