A deadly tornado has made landfall in Mississippi, officials said.
A “devastating” tornado swept across Mississippi late Friday, killing at least seven people and leaving trails of damage for more than 100 miles, local and federal officials said.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said late Friday that search and rescue operations were underway in Sharkey and Humphreys counties. Officials have issued a series of tornado warnings in counties across the state.
“Many people in MS Delta need your prayers and God’s protection tonight,” Governor Tate Reeves said. twitter“We have started medical assistance. We are ramping up ambulances and other emergency assets for those affected. Search and rescue is brisk.”
Sharky County Coroner Angelia Easton told ABC News that at least seven people died, but added that their ages could not yet be confirmed.
Tornadoes were reported in Silver City and Rolling Fork around 8:50 p.m. local time as thunderstorms hit the state late Friday, the National Weather Service said. From there, the tornado rolled along the northwestern side of Chula and along Route 49, officials said.

A tornado emergency warning has been issued for the city of Winona, about 100 miles northeast of Rolling Fork, with a “devastating tornado moving northeast through town,” an NWS official said.
Jose Watson of the Mississippi Highway Patrol urged people to stay away from Silver City unless family members were there. He said he was finding it difficult to work.
“Silver City was hit very hard by the tornado,” Watson said in a video posted on Facebook, before explaining that damage in some areas was “extremely devastating.” .
