48 Hours: Chowchilla’s Abduction (10pm, CBS)
Tonight’s episode recalls the kidnapping of 26 children ages 5 to 14 in 1976 on a school bus on their way home from summer school in the small town of Chowchilla, California. The kidnappers who held the children and the bus driver at gunpoint were his three young men from wealthy families who planned to hold the children ransom. This is believed to be the largest kidnapping in US history. The men took the children to a remote quarry he was 100 miles away and buried them alive in his truck trailer. After spending 16 hours underground, the children and the bus driver miraculously dug themselves out and escaped.
One of the kidnapped students, Jody Heffington, was 10 years old at the time. In tonight’s episode, she details her memories of the event in a never-before-seen interview, including an interview with then-six-year-old Larry Park.
This episode speaks not just of kidnapping, but of the emotional and psychological toll it takes on children and their families for a lifetime.
