3 dead, 2 wounded in Farmington attack

Four people, including the suspect, were killed and two police officers were injured in a shooting in northwestern New Mexico on Monday, authorities said.

Farmington police said three “civilian victims” died, in addition to one suspect “who was confronted and killed at the scene”.

A Farmington police officer and a state police officer were also injured, according to Farmington Police. Both were kept in stable condition at the San Juan Regional Medical Center.

“The identity of the suspect is unknown and there are no other known threats at this time,” a police statement said. “At this time, we do not believe there is a second suspect.”

Judith McIntosh, 77, told NBC News on Monday afternoon that she saw a woman lying on the street while driving home from the grocery store with a friend. I thought she was crazy, but she continued driving. Shortly after, three to five shots rang out near a church near her home.

McIntosh later said he saw at least one person lying on the lawn on the church grounds.

“The first time I saw an elderly woman on the street, I thought she had been hit by a car,” McIntosh said. “And we went a little farther by the church and heard gunshots…and saw other people lying on the ground and said, ‘Oh my god, what’s going on?’ What’s going on?’ People are being killed. ”

“I’m still very upset,” she added.

McIntosh said police activity in the area was high at the time and he was unable to enter his home for hours. But that’s when she realized a gunshot pierced her bedroom window.

“There were bullet holes in the bedroom window, curtains, living room and recliner.”

McIntosh said the bullet hit the living room wall.

“If I happened to be at home, I could have been shot,” she said.

Investigators are concentrating their search on Dustin Street between Ute and Apache streets in Farmington, officials said.

With a population of just over 46,000, the city lies about 320 miles northwest of the state capital, Santa Fe.

The community is near the famous Four Corners, where the New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, and Arizona borders meet, and is also near three major Native American reservations. The Navajo, Ute Mountain Indians, and Southern Utes are all in close proximity to Farmington.

Five New Mexico lawmakers (Martin Heinrich, Senator Ben Ray Lujan, U.S. Representative Teresa Leisure Fernandez, Melanie Stansbury, and Gabe Vazquez) issued a joint statement to first responders He thanked him and vowed to fight gun violence through federal law.

Monday’s shooting follows two other mass shootings in the past nine days. Two people were killed and five injured in a shooting in Yuma, Arizona, on Saturday night, police said.

The seven victims, all male, were found with gunshot wounds. Two of the victims, ages 19 and 20, were taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead. No suspects were detained.

A week before the shooting, a gunman killed eight people at a Dallas-area outlet mall.

The 33-year-old shooter, a neo-Nazi sympathizer who used an AR-15 assault weapon, was killed by a police officer who happened to be in an Allen shopping center, officials said.

Victims included a boy, his parents, two school-aged sisters, a security guard working toward a target, and an engineer who had just completed his master’s degree.
