A Baton Rouge police helicopter crashed in West Baton Rouge County on Sunday, killing two local police officers, according to the Baton Rouge Police Department.
“This incident is currently being investigated by multiple law enforcement agencies and other agencies that regulate aviation and airspace travel,” Baton Rouge Police said.
A BRPD helicopter crashed into a sugar cane field on North Winterville Road just off Route 190, officials said.
According to flight data, the helicopter was scheduled to take off from Baton Rouge Metro Airport at 2:26 am and arrive at Omni Airport at 3:38 am. The pilot did not come home from work.
Sources told WBRZ that the helicopter was chasing a vehicle fleeing police when the crash occurred.
Baton Rouge Police Department has released a statement following the news of the tragic accident. “The entire BRPD family expresses their heartfelt sympathies to their families, friends, and all those touched by the lives and service of these officers,” the statement read.
