A shooting at a community college outside Oklahoma City on Monday killed one person and arrested a suspect, officials said.
Rhodes State University, about eight miles east of downtown Oklahoma City, issued its first shooting alert at 12:36 p.m. (CT).
“We are currently experiencing active shootings on campus,” said a statement posted by the school.
“Stay safe and follow the instructions of law enforcement officers. Please follow us for more information as it becomes available.”
Midwest City Deputy Fire Chief Anthony Lopez said one person was killed in the shooting.
Students first reported the shooting from the humanities building shortly after 12:15 p.m., according to a school spokesperson.
That statement was followed by word that the suspect had been taken into custody.
Midwest Police Chief Sid Porter told reporters that weeks before the shooting, college students and staff had completed exercises on what to do in the event of a mass shooting.
Just over an hour after the initial warning, the school announced that all buildings on campus were clear and the lockdown was over.
The school posted on Twitter, “Please avoid the south side of the Humanities Educational Affairs Building.” “All remaining activities and classes for Monday, April 24th are cancelled.”
Police officers were seen clustered around the Larry W. Nutter Administration Building and the adjacent Russell Vought Humanities Building.
This two-year university opened in 1970 and currently has approximately 13,000 students.
